  • Learning about the Humble Beginnings of the Boston Terrier Dog

The Boston terrier is a fun-loving, friendly small dog who will adjust to a family home or atmosphere with ease. These people-friendly dogs need lots of attention from their owners, as they want to be a part of the action! There is a lot to learn about the Boston terrier, as far as its history, temperament, and special needs are concerned; but for this article, let’s take a general overview of the Boston terrier.

The Boston terrier certainly is a unique breed in many ways. The history of this breed begins in 1870 when a man from Boston purchased a dog which was a cross between an English White Terrier and an English Bull dog. Boston terrier types were bred smaller with French bulldogs, thus bringing forth what we know as the Boston terrier. An interesting thing to know about the Boston terrier is that they were not bred for sporting activities such as hunting and were the first non-sporting dogs to be bred in America. Boston terrier breeders tend to focus more on the show potential of Boston terriers, attempting remove the general perceptive that they are aggressive like most terriers.

The Unique Temperament and Personality of the Boston Terrier

Boston Terriers have a high-spirited personality that likes to engage those around it. This kind of dog was bred originally for fighting, yet was later bred to be a companion dog. It has a sweet and friendly disposition toward its owner and likes to be the center of attention. It is a known fact about Boston Terriers that they are very affectionate toward their owners as well, often licking them in the face if the owner will let them. They are social animals and get along well when raised around children, the elderly and others.

Taking Care of the Boston Terrier

Like other dog breeds, an important thing to remember about your Boston terrier is that it gets plenty of exercise outdoors to ensure that he/she stays healthy and alert. While not generally hyperactive dogs, they do need to run and play in the sunshine frequently. If they are staying outdoors, a fenced in backyard is a good idea, as well as a small doghouse to protect them from the elements. These dogs need lots of tender loving care, so spending quality time with them playing and petting them is important. Of course, feeding and providing plenty of water is a must, as with any pet.

If you are seriously considering buying your own Boston terrier than one of the first places you should look are Boston terrier rescue centers. These are places that care for and look after abandoned Boston terriers and are always looking for foster families to take a Boston terrier or two off their hands.

Looking into the life of this fascinating dog is a revealing journey which should begin by taking a deeper look into the history and origin of the Boston terrier.
