There are three different methods currently in use as no bark collars for
dogs. All of them work, but there is some debate as to whether these collars are
ethical to use. If you own a dog, you should know at least a bit about the type
of no bark collar that you plan to use on your dog.
Citronella Spray Collars
Some no bark dog collars work by emitting a spray of citrus smell if the dog
barks for a while. Dogs don't like this smell, so they will stop barking in
order to avoid it. These collars often come with a design that makes them give
out a hissing sound before they release the citrus smell, so a dog that stops
when it hears the sound can avoid the release of the smell. These no bark
collars are considered ethical by experts, as there is no pain involved, just a
mild annoyance for the dog.
Sonic No Bark Collars
These collars work by emitting a very high pitched sound when the dog barks. It
sounds to the dog very similar to the sound a dog's whistle makes. This sound
can't be perceived by humans, but it can be perceived by dogs, who learn to stop
barking so as to avoid the sound. Dog trainers and veterinarians see no problem
with these collars, as they aren't harmful. Once again, there is no pain
involved – it’s just a bit annoying for the dog. Note: This type of no bark
collar is considered the least effective, as the dog can become used to the
sound over time.
Electric No Bark Collars
These collars give the dog a small electrical shock when it barks. The shock
isn't painful, it's similar to what you feel when you handle fabrics or walk
over a rug. Once again, mostly just an annoyance – but this is the type of no
bark collar that some people believe is unethical. The main reason why these
people consider this collar unethical is that it actually causes a physical
stimulus that can be felt by the dog. Some people don’t like that. But does it
work? Yes, it does; so condiser it an option if your dog tends to bark too much.
To make a dog behave and reduce excessive barking, you can choose between spray
collars, sonic collars, or electrical shock collars. Most people have no
problems with spray collars or sonic collars, but the idea of an electrical
shock makes them think that shock collars aren't good for dogs. However, all
three methods are perfectly safe for dogs.
no bark collars are a great way to reduce excessive barking that isn't related to your dog's health. Although most people don't have a problem with them, some of them think shock collars are unethical. Nevertheless, all no bark dog collars are perfectly safe.
