Boston Terrier Training – Train Your Boston Terrier to Play Dead

Here is a pretty cool trick that you can teach your Boston terrier. You can teach him to “play dead” on command. There are a couple different ways that people have their dog perform this trick. Some people train their little Boston to lay on their back with their legs sticking straight up in the air for this trick, but I personally have my little guy perform it a little different. I have my Boston terrier simply lay still on his side for this trick.

Before teaching this trick to your dog, it is important that he obeys and fully understands the “down” command.

Here are the simple steps for training your little friend to “play dead” on command:

1.) Make sure to have some tasty treats available that your dog loves.

2.) Your Boston terrier must first go in the “down” position.

3.) While your little friend is in the “down” position, take one of the treats in your hand and hold it to the side of his head, and then slowly move the treat over his head and to his other side.

4.) Your Boston terrier should use his body to follow the movement of the treat, and turn onto his side.

5.) Once your Boston terrier turns onto his side, praise him and give him the treat.

Repetition is crucial when teaching this trick to your little buddy! Most likely your Boston will not fully understand the trick right away, after just a couple times of doing it. You need to practice it over & over again for your little Boston to fully understand it. You should practice it enough times so your little buddy knows that when you say “play dead”, a treat will be coming if he performs the trick correctly(lays still on his side and plays dead).

Time and patience is also very important! This trick can really take a lot of time and patience for your little friend to fully understand! If it takes your dog a while to understand this trick, it can really get frustrating for both you and your little buddy. Whatever happens during your Boston terrier training, make sure that you never get mad (or at least let him know that you are mad)! This needs to be nothing but a fun and happy time for your companion. You do not want him to associate this trick with anything negative.
