which puppy food is right for my future puppy? it is going to be a boston terrier so i need a puppy food and later on a good adult dog food. i want the dog food that will keep my puppy happy and healthy, and keep its coat looking his/her best! i was looking a beneful, but i have heard some bad things about it. are they true? is beneful good for my dog?
I've found Blue buffalo to be one of the best. You want to keep away from foods with corn listed as one of the top ingredients, no meat by-products, no preservatives! Basically read the ingredient list…If it doesn't sound good for you to eat then dont feed it to your puppy!

Ok answer is, there is no food that is right for every dog. And you have heard right beneful is a very very bad food. For a small dog like a boston, it will be easier for you to afford a high quality food. Please stay away from anything you can buy at a grocery store, science diet, eukanuba or anything iams. Buy a food that does not use a filler as the first ingredient and stay away from foods that contain corn as it is very hard for dogs to digest. It also has zero nutritional value.With foods that contain a lot of fillers you will sometimes find people who have to feed twice the amount of food with a cheap brand compared to a high quality brand. Some good brands, solid gold and wellness I fed both to my pomeranian puppy, canidae, orijen, taste of the wild, innova evo. Just to name a few.

What to looks for:
1) Good meat sources – you want the first couple of ingredients to be a good protein source. You want the first ingredient to be chicken, lamb, salmon etc MEAL (more protein dense because the moisture was removed). You don't want anything like meat meal though, or digest.
2) You don't want to see any corn or wheat. Instead look for barley.
3) No by-products.
4) No fillers, like corn
5) No BHA, BHT, ethoxyquin…you want natural preservatives.
6) No dyes
Here are some good brans – Wellness, Innova EVO, Merrick, Eagle Pack Holistic Select (not regular eagle pack), Nature's Variety Instinct, Solid Gold, Orijen, Chicken Soup for the Dog Lover's Soul etc…
Don't believe everything you see on TV – Pedigree, Iams, Eukanuba, Ol' Roy, Beneful, Science Diet, these are all garbage with a good name because they are good at advertising.
Let me guve you a little lesson – the ingredients that are put into foods that you find at Wal-Mart or groceries stores are low quality and almost useless for your animals. They contain "fillers". Fillers include things like corn…which animals cannot even digest, so you are feeding them food that they cannot use. They also contain "by-products" which can include dead or diseased meat that did not pass for human consumption or any other parts of any animal that is not meat (ie, lungs, spleen, kidneys, brain, livers, blood, bone, partially defatted low temperature fatty tissue, and stomachs and intestines).
On the other hand you can buy high quality food – All of these foods do NOT contain any fillers (like corn, corn gluten meal), any grains or by-products. They are more expensive then regular foods – but you are paying for quality because your dog CAN digest approximately 94% of what is in the bag (compared to approx. 40% of other foods)

I have a dachshund/cocker mix and she loves Beneful. If I buy anything else she turns her nose up and won't eat it until she is starving. I like Beneful but I have heard some bad things about it but never had a problem. Some people say that you should buy food that doesn't have corn in it. Beneful does. All I know is my dog, Cricket, loves it and demands it. Good luck.

About the above comment, i have a basset hound and he enjoys beneful as well. however, i spoke with my vetrinarian and she said that purina beneful is probably the best of the cheapest kind. now, its not the best. i heard the Nutra brand is really good. i would listen to the people above that say about the 'no corn' and 'no byproducts' they are absolutely right. u can see it in the ingredience. and a lot of times its real expensive to by the best kind, but it all depends on how you want your dog to live and his/her health.

Beneful is /terrible/. Very low quality food. Full of corn and dyes and call kinds of yucky things.
Not all pet food is made equally. A lot of it is full of corn, by-products, dyes, unhealthy preservatives, filler grains and all sorts of nasty stuff. A lot of pet food companies are perfectly happy to dump cheap leftovers in. Will it kill your dog? No, it has to be nutritionally complete and safe to even be marketed. Is it healthy? Not by a long shot.
Corn is a low quality ingredient you never want to see in your pet food. Corn and low quality grains are two of the biggest culprits when it comes to food allergies in our pets.
Thankfully, there are some excellent dog foods being made these days that include organic, human grade ingredients rather than trash not fit for human consumption.
Examples of low quality foods to avoid: Anything you can find in a grocery store will be low end, Purina, Iams, Eukanuba, Science Diet, Royal Canin, Pedigree, Kibbles n' Bits, Beneful, Ol'Roy.
Examples of high quality foods to look for: Innova, Wellness, Solid Gold, Canidae, Fromm, Merrick, GO Natural, Nature's Variety, Nature's Logic.
Although the high quality foods are more expensive, you're getting what you're paying for. Less filler material means more concentrated nutrients… this means you typically need to feed far less of the high quality food than you would of the low quality one. Which also means less poop!
A great option is to go with an entirely grainless diet. Many of the high quality foods now put out grainless formulas. Some good grainless diet's include: Innova EVO, Wellness CORE, Blue Wilderness, Nature's Variety Instinct, Orijen, Fromm Surf & Turf, Now! and Sold Gold Barking At The Moon.
Some of the high end foods can be found in common pet stores. Petsmart carries Blue Buffalo products (such as the excellent grain free diet Blue Wilderness). Petco carries Wellness and Solid Gold. If you can't find a food, most of the high quality food brands have websites with store locators on them.
Remember that foods should be switched gradually, especially when switching to a higher quality one, so as not to upset tummies.
Another option for feeding dogs is to feed raw. This is something that should be thoroughly researched before being attempted:
