want a Boston terrier, and I have 3 cats. Are bostons compatible with cats? Will my cats beat it up? And also, are they OK being on their own? My dog would only be home alone for less than 5 hours about 3 days a week. We have a large farm it could tramp around on, so what do you think? Could I take care of this dog? I don’t want to be unfair to it, so please, I welcome your answers. Also, are there any Boston terrier rescues around the NH area?
A friend of mine had a young, female Boston that coexisted with her 2 cats without a problem. It’s all on an individual basis, though – and the less exercise this hyperactive breed gets, the more likely you’ll have an issue.
However, you say you have lots of acreage for the pup to run himself out, so that’s in your favor. The very small amount of time that he’ll be alone will help as well, as you’ll be able to supervise him around the cats. I’d say give it a shot!
As for rescues, I found this New Hampshire Boston Terrier rescue (the “Boston Terrier Tea Party” – how cute!). Good luck, and kudos to you for leaning towards a rescue rather than a breeder!

Bostons and cats get along great! no puppy is okay being on its own, but once its older that amount of time should be no problem.

have your cats ever been around dogs?
will this be a puppy?
those are 2 key questions…
you can train puppies to like cats and cats that have never been around dogs might be uneasy at first – but they will get used to it (mine always have)
where as if this is a dog that has never liked cats – i am sorry but without major training the dog will more than likely stress the cats/or kill one of them.
if the dog has never been around a cat – then it’s a trail by error type of deal
all of my dogs and cats have always gotten along.
good luck.

i understand that u want boston terrier but it’s really hard to find pure breeds in rescue or shelter. the easiest place to find will be the breeder but that’ll cost too much money. so think about adopting boston terrier MIx. and about getting along with cats, it depends. usually, if u ask people that works there, they will tell u if it gets along with cats. but u have to make sure that ur cat gets aloing with other dogs. u can test that by inviting ur neighbor or friend’s dog to ur house and see if ur cat gets along. good luck

Boston Terriers are wonderful little dogs with great personalities! Some get along with cats just fine and some don’t. This is true of all breeds. There are many Boston Terriers for adoption thru “friends of Homeless animals” Their site can be found on http://www.petfinder.com. This organization fosters dogs and many of them are Boston Terriers in the New England area. When you talk to a foster mom, she will know all about the dogs personality and if it gets along with cats and other animals. I had the pleasure of adopting a dog thru hem, so I know first hand that it was a great experience. Good luck to you!

Boston Terriers are fine with cats. Many members on my Yahoo group Boston Terrier Family have Bostons and cats together. Just make sure you introduce them properly and everything should be fine.
As for being alone for 5 hours that can be tough with a very young pup, but if you crate train it should be fine. Bostons are very hardy and intelligent dogs and you will find they are extremely easy to train. Both of my two were potty trained within a couple of weeks.
There are a few Boston Rescues in the New Hampshire area. Here is a link to the Boston Tea Party Rescue, they will help you find one. http://www.petfinder.com/shelters/MA43.html
As well as Nationwide Boston Terrier Rescue. http://www.petfinder.com/shelters/nationwidebostonterrierrescue.html
Bostons are wonderful little characters and you will love being owned by one! They enjoy your companionship but also do enjoy their alone time. Once again crate training is easy and helpful with a Boston, since they end up finding comfort and safety in their crates.
Good luck and if you need help finding a Boston to adopt from a rescue please feel free to contact me. My group has a few rescues we are involved with.
