Looking for a Boston Terrier Puppy. Why Are Pet Stores, Even “Reputable Ones” Considered Bad?

We would like a Purebred BT puppy – I am leery of rescues because of perceived temperamental problems. .What’s the REAL POOP on a nice, clean neighborhood pet store with the pup I’m looking for, with a sheet listing “the heredity” of the dog? I’ve heard SO MUCH stuff ?
Thanks!

There is *no* such thing as a reputable pet store. Why, you ask? Because there is no reputable breeder out there who would *ever* sell their puppied to a pet store.

La di frickn da! A sheet with the heredity of the dog. What about registration papers? What about breeder help when you have questions? What about proof of OFA, CERF, thyroid, heart and other genetic testing?

A pet store is the worst place for you to get a dog.

because the likelyhood is the clean pet store got the puppy from a puppy mill were the dogs are not taken care of properly. get your puppy from a reputable breeder. rescues sometimes have puppies as well. not all dogs are given up because of behavior many dogs are being left because the owner was in the military and got deployed, people moved, had too many dogs, found the dog, shelter had too many dogs, etc. and often dogs with behavior problems in one environment can be rehabilitated in another.

Pet store dogs are generally from puppy mills or backyard breeders. Puppy mills basically mass produce dogs. The females are continually pregnant. As soon as they wean their pups, they are impregnated again. They are kept in cramped cages, not much bigger than themselves and are never allowed to even touch the grass. Their puppies are often taken from them too early and will end up with behavioral problems as a result. Also, the pedigree on these dogs is generally questionable at best. Backyard breeders basically taken their common “purebred” dog and breed it to make a few bucks on puppies. Yes, their dog might be purebred but if they don’t have spectacular pedigrees, as well as passing all health and temperament tests, as well as having won titles, they are not going to better the breed when their pups are born. The conditions in both places tend to be very inhumane. If people stop supporting these places, they will have no choice but to stop breeding.

pet stores are considered bad because alot of them get their puppies from puppy mills. you should google puppy mills. they’re horrific. get your dog from a certified breeder.

i hate to say it, but id actually rather you get a pup from a byb than a petstore. at least the pup is with its mother and little mates so you can kinda know what to expect behavioral and look wise.

The worst thing about buying dogs from pet stores is you dont know where the dog came from, even if you do have a sheet that lists the “heredity” of a dog, whos to say thats even true…its easy to fake a bloodline for dogs that come out of pet shops. Also pups that come from pet stores are usually not tested for heriditary disease and the parents are not temprement tested either. You never get to see the parents, or the conditions the pups and parents were kept in. The plain fact of the matter is that any Backyard breeder could come into a pet store and say I want to sell you some purebred Labradors, when they could be mixes of anything. Most pet stores are not well educated on determining a dog’s breed, so they may say your getting a Boston Terrier, but you could be getting anything.

pet shops are not “reputable” places to get puppies from! Petshops obtain their pups from puppy millers and irresponsible breeders.. there’s no guarantee that the dog will even really be a purebred.. and the crappy guarantee you get from the shop doesnt cover very much.. most petshops offer only a “72 hour” guarantee.. genetic health issues cant even be tested until a dog is 2 years of age.. and many problems like parvo can incubate up to 10-14 days before symptoms occour! At best the petshop will give you registration papers, health papers showing what vaccines/wormers the dog got (the pup was probably also pumped full of antibiotics before arriving at the petshop too!), and maybe a pedigree.. this doesnt show anything about the genetics about the pup.. often registration papers, and by that extent pedigrees, are forged anyways just to get papers on the puppy. These people are out for a profit, they are not going to bother with researching the pedigree and spending money on genetic health tests.

Your best bet is to get a referral to a REPUTABLE breeder thru the breed club.. to a breeder who shows, earns CH titles on her dogs, does genetic health testing on ALL dogs before breeding them, and offers a minimum 2 year health guarantee on congenital illness..

Don't be leery of rescues, you would be doing a good thing by rescuing.
All dogs in rescues and shelters are temperment tested. It's an EXTREMELY nit picky, thorough process.
You could also always get a puppy, who has a clean slate, and raise it up well.

There is no bad dog, just bad owners.
Even a dog with temperment problem can be trained by someone willing to give it a new "leash" on life

This is why… this is where all pet stores get their dogs:

Because Pet Stores buy from BYB’s and Puppy Mills, reputable breeders will not sell to Pet Stores for any reason

and the same, any Reputable Pet Store does not sell puppies or kittens………..they will allow rescue clubs and adoptions to take place but will not sell them.

legit:;any pet store that allows dogs or kittens to be sold, is not a good pet store, no matter how fancy they look.
