Are Boston Terriers Hard to Take Care Of?

I've heard that they are, that they tend to have a lot of medical problems and can hit you really hard on the wallet. I promised my daughter a puppy and she fell in love with Boston Terriers and I want to know if the risk if any ok to take.

I don't think they are a sickly breed at all. They have a lot of energy…love to play. So cute.

If you get a well bred Boston from a reputable breeder that performs health tests your chances of high vet bills will be greatly reduced.

Bostons are a brachycephalic (short snout) breed and those breeds tend to have more medical costs in general.

As long as you do your homework it is worth the risk. They are typically great family dogs.

Boston Terriers are great. They are both very social and trainable as far as dogs go. I haven't heard anything about them having lots of health problems. My brother is on his second one and neither one of his had any health issues. He purchased both through a very reputable breeder which does make a difference.

They are great dogs for kids, and nice to have around. There are genetic faults in any breed, that you can avoid by getting a quality puppy from a quality breeder. Bostons are prone to allergies, patellar luxation (loose kneecaps), and cataracts. A good breeder will have the parent dogs certified free of the second two, and will only breed adult dogs that are not prone to allergies. If you buy from a pet store, or back yard breeder, your dog's genetic health is much more likely to be questionable. Meet your breeder, your pup's parents, and pay for quality. This will save you lots of money in the long run.

Boston Terrier is lively, smart, and affectionate with a gentle, even temperament. They can, however, be stubborn, so persistence and consistency are definite musts when training.

Not any more than any other breed. They're great pets. My parents had 2 and I believe they lived to be 14 and 17 years old. Every breed has its specific ailments … ear problems, hip problems, etc. Do a quick check for this breed, but don't take anything to heart. It's just what they are most common to get, but that's not a definate. I had dogs that were prone to ear problems, but never got any. Shepherds have hip displacements … know several .. and none ever had a hip problem. Get your pet(s) and have fun with them!
