Why Are Boston Terriers Called an Exception to the Terrier Breed?

I've heard people say that numerious times. Why do they say that?

The wild, aggressive terrier personality was bred out of them.

"Bred down in size from pit-fighting dogs of the bull and terrier types, the Boston Terrier originally weighed up to 44 pounds (20 kg.) (Olde Boston Bulldogge). It is difficult to believe that these dapper little dogs were once tough pit-fighters….Terrier only in name, the Boston Terrier has lost most of their ruthless desire for mayhem, preferring the company of humans, although some males will still challenge other dogs if they feel their territory is being invaded."

    Temperament: Highly intelligent, alert, and enthusiastic, the Boston Terrier is affectionate and loyal. This breed is quite animated and has a lovely sense of humor. They thrive on human interaction and on being an integral part of the family. They do best in a home with children over the age of eight years and are exceedingly good with the elderly. They will generally get along with non-canine pets, although males may fight with other dogs. The Boston Terrier has a very sensitive nature and will be affected either positively or negatively by tone of voice or the home atmosphere and environment.

    Pros
    * Is small yet sturdy — not a delicate lapdog
    * Is round-headed and short-faced, with large expressive eyes
    * Has a sleek easy-care coat
    * Is usually good-natured with people and other pets-That the number 1 reason i think there an exception to the terrier breed
    * Has a passion for playing games and chasing balls
    Cons

    * A careful search to avoid all the neurotic Boston Terriers
    * Snorting, snuffling, wheezing, snoring
    * Tendency to drool
    * Gassiness (flatulence)
    * Slowness to housebreak
    * Quite a few health problems

    The group titled "terriers" were originally rat and vermin hunters. Boston terriers were not used for this (their snouts are not designed right for this). They were bred to be "companion" dogs.

    Maybe because they are not in the "Terrier Group" but in the non-sporting group per AKC?

    Because "technically" Bostons aren't terriers at all. They don't have the same genetic forms as actual terriers. Terriers have a very distinct personality.
