Boston Terrier Dog Breed

History

Beginning around 1870, Boston Terriers were originally a cross breed of an English Terrier and an English Bull dog, and was originally known as Hooper’s Judge. A Hooper’s Judge was then bread with a smaller dog, cross bred with a french bull dog, and finally ending up as a Boston Terrier. When first popular in the States, they were prized as fighting dogs, originally being around 40 pounds, much larger that the breeds of today. They were officially admitted into the American Kennel Club in 1893.

Temperaments

They are very loving and loyal to their owners. They are very playful, quick to teach, and want to be part of the family. It takes a lot to get them angry, and often they will walk away rather than get mean. They will often show their feelings through their eyes the most. When upset they tend to tear up and give you that sad sad look. Because they are loyal, and only really bark if they perceive danger, they tend to make really good watch dogs. This also makes them ideal house pets for families with children as well as older people. They are a little high strung so if they don’t have things to do, people to play with, they may get into mischief. Over all that make really good house pets, and generally have a well mannered temperament.

Upkeep and Grooming

Their coats are short and they don’t shed very much but as with any dog should be brushed regularly with a non metallic brush. Because of their short fur, they are an indoor pet, while taking them out for short walks and chances for exercise during the summer are okay, in the winter they should be outside as little as possible. Short and stocky by nature, they are ideal for apartments, smaller homes, and places where a larger pet may find uncomfortable.

Health Problems and Concerns

They do tend to have some health problems that an owner should be aware of. Because of their flat faces, they can have troubles breathing, more so when they are stressed out or overheated, and have some kinds of allergies as well. Another reason they are considered an indoor pet. Because they have such big buggy eyes, they are easily damaged and can develop eye problems, like Cataracts, Corneal Ulcers, and others. They are prone to deafness, hip dysphasia, as well as many minor problems. With proper diet, grooming and preventative care, this breed should remain healthy for many years.

Boston Terrier Eye Problems

Wednesday, September 21st, 2011

Those buggy eyes are cute, but they can develop eye problems. Some of the Boston Terrier eye problems can include, but are not limited to cataracts, corneal ulcers and environmental irritation. Another eye difficulty that can affect Boston Terriers is an affliction known as Cherry Eye.

Most incidences of cataracts are inherited. Juvenile cataracts may appear between ages one to four, while late-onset cataracts can occur slowly as the dog ages. Cataracts can lead to blindness, but not always. When your Boston Terrier gets older, they can develop other health problems, such as diabetes, which can also cause cataracts. Things to watch for are bluish, grey or white flecks in the eye. In some cases, surgery may be possible to correct cataracts.

Another common Boston Terrier eye problem is corneal ulcers. These may develop through irritation of the eyes from particles in the environment or from other internal eye health issues that cause infection and irritation. Injury of the eye is a common cause of corneal ulcers as well.

The best prevention of corneal ulcers is to protect your Boston Terrier’s eyes. Anything that could potentially scratch or cause injury to the eye, such as a sharp plant spikes, cat’s claws or using strong household chemical cleansers near your dog should be avoided.

Boston Terrier’s eyes can be susceptible to problems when exposed to harsh elements, such as sun and wind. Allowing her to have her head out the window while you are driving should be avoided. If you are going to be in sunny, windy or dusty conditions, consider getting a pair of dog goggles for your furry friend.

Cherry Eye can look similar to a tumor in the eye, as it is usually a bright red mass protruding out of the eye. It is caused by a gland popping out of its normal position. Boston Terriers have a third eyelid where this gland is located. Once the gland pops out, it swells up outside the eye, causing the unsightly cherry eye. This needs to be corrected surgically, but it is a fairly common procedure and most veterinarians would be familiar with it.

Keep a close watch for Boston Terrier eye problems. This is not meant to diagnose any eye condition. If your dog exhibits any symptoms of discomfort, is rubbing her eyes, or the eyes are red or discolored, please contact your veterinarian immediately.

Boston Terrier – Facts Every Owner of This Dog Breed Should Know

Boston Terrier - Facts Every Owner of This Dog Breed Should Know

The Boston Terrier is one of the few breeds of dog that America can claim as its own. Around 1870, Robert C. Hooper of Boston purchased Hooper’s Judge, a cross between an English Bulldog and an English White Terrier. Hooper’s Judge was bred with a smaller female, and that litter bred with French bulldogs, providing the beginnings of the Boston Terrier, America’s first non-hunting dog. Though originally bred for dog fighting, Boston Terriers are no longer used for that purpose and the aggressive traits have been bred out of the breed.

Also know as the Boston Bull, Boston Terriers are compact, muscular dogs with short, wide muzzles, dark, large round eyes, short tails and pointy erect ears. Their short coats come in black and white or brown and white and are easy to groom. Some breeders have tried selling all white Boston Terriers as rare. However, an all white coloring generally indicates a genetic weakness, making them more prone to health problems. Though Boston Terriers do shed, it is not excessive and with regular brushing, the shedding is easy to manage. Baths are only given when necessary.

With the proper care, Boston Terriers can live 15 years or longer, but usually average about 13 years. Boston Terriers will grow to an average of 15 to 17 inches in height and 10 to 25 pounds in weight. Their smaller size makes them suitable for all types of living environments including apartments. Boston Terriers do need regular sessions of walking and playtime, and do not require large amounts of space for their exercise. They are sociable and friendly dogs that are described as intelligent and energetic. Boston Terriers make good family pets and companions and are generally good around children and other pets. They make fair watchdogs; some Boston Terriers will bark only when necessary and others will never bark.

Boston Terriers are prone to breathing problems, due to their short snouts. Some of them will snore when sleeping, which can be a sign of a more serious medical condition, but it can be corrected with surgery. Exercise caution when out in excessive heat and humidity with a Boston Terrier, as they are more prone to heat exhaustion due to their short snouts. Boston Terriers are more likely to experience problems with heart and skin tumors and are more likely to suffer eye injuries due to their prominent eyes.

There is a website that has great information on Boston Terriers and most other breeds of dogs. It has details that pertain to a dog breeds health, grooming, living conditions, best food choices and more, the website is called: Dog And Cat Facts, and can be found at this url:

Boston Terrier Health Problems – a Guide

Thursday, June 16th, 2011

We may be a little biased but the Boston Terrier is one of the authors favorite dog breeds not just because it is beautiful to look at but because of its nature and behavioral traits. However, as with all breeds, this breed are predisposed to certain health problems highlighted below.

Fact File

  1. This breed have large ears that stick up vertically and a small snub like snout. Their eyes also protrude slightly from the face. Due to eyes protruding from the face they are more likely to get foreign objects irritating them and causing problems – such as grass and grass seed.
  2. This breed are also prone to Respiratory problems associated with their short snout – this is a similar problem experienced by other similar short muzzled breeds including the Pug and Shih Tzu. The actual technical name for a breed of dog with a short muzzle is a Brachycephalic breed.
  3. This breed do not like extreme weather – i.e. they don’t respond well to extreme cold or extreme hot weather.
  4. Due again to the short muzzle they can have a tendency to snore when they are asleep. They can also experience a reverse sneeze on occasions – this is when they will inhale quickly through their nose and then gag to clear the mucus.
  5. The Boston Terrier are also prone to a build up of gas in their stomach and small intestines so you need to keep a close eye on this.
  6. It is also reasonably common for this breed to get ear yeast infections mainly because their ears stick up and are more open to infection.
  7. Patella Luxation is another problem in this breed – this is when there is a rupture within the cruciate ligament. This will cause lots of pain and limping.

It is also more common for this breed to get specific eye problems due to their large and protruding eyes, including…

  1. Cherry Eye
  2. Glaucoma
  3. Corneal Ulcers
  4. Dry Eye
  5. Cataracts
  6. Distichiasis
  7. Entropion

Although Boston Terrier health problems do occur it certainly does not mean that your dog will get any of them – it just means he is more likely to get them. So don’t panic and don’t let it put you off getting this wonderful breed.

Boston Terrier Health Problems

The Boston Terrier is a fairly sturdy breed. The list of most common Boston Terrier health problems is relatively short, and most people enjoy a long, healthy life with their lovable companion.

These issues generally include eye, orthopedic and skin issues, but Boston Terriers are also known for having breathing problems as well.

Whether you are considering bringing home a Boston Terrier puppy or already enjoy the company of this sweet and gentle breed, you will need to be aware of some of the issues that may affect the health of your beloved pet.

Eyes: Those cartoon bulgy eyes are cute, but can develop problems such as cataracts that can lead to blindness with age. Watch for bluish, grey or white flecks in the eye. In some cases, surgery may be possible to correct it. Another eye problem is corneal ulcers. These may develop through irritation of the eyes from particles in the environment or from other internal eye health issues that cause infection and irritation. Protect your Boston Terrier’s eyes in dusty or windy conditions.

Orthopedic: Boston Terrier health problems can include knee and back leg problems known as Patellar Luxation. Signs of patellar luxation are limping, pain, and frequent stops to stretch the rear leg. This condition can sometimes require surgery.

Skin: Allergic Dermatitis is one of the skin issues that many Boston Terriers deal with. Allergy testing by a dermatologist can help to determine the underlying causes. Sometimes the dog may have to eat a specialty diet and take medicine to combat the problem. Although it is not recommended to bathe the afflicted animal too often, using medicated shampoos and lotions can sometimes help.

Breathing Problems: Because of the short head of the Boston Terrier, there is a little more work for them in order to breathe. For that reason, Boston Terriers tend to snuffle, snort and even snore. (Mine snores pretty loud!) It is recommended that you use a harness-style instead of a traditional neck collar for this reason.

By all means, this does not include all Boston Terrier health problems that may be experienced and is not meant to diagnose any condition. If your dog exhibits any symptoms of discomfort or illness, do not hesitate to call your veterinarian immediately.

Introducing the Boston Terrier Dog

The dogs of the Boston terrier breed are small sized dogs, have a friendly character and love having fun, so they are suitable as a family pet and can do well in a small house or an apartment. These people-friendly dogs need lots of attention from their owners, as they want to be a part of the action! We shall start with a general overview of the Boston terrier, though there is a lot to talk about the history of this breed and about the temperament and special requirements of the Boston terrier dogs.

The Boston terrier certainly is a unique breed in many ways. The ancestors of the Boston terrier dogs are a crossbreed between the English White Terrier and the English Bulldog, that were imported in Boston in 1870, the year when the history of this breed begins. The original breeder wanted a smaller dog, so he crossed this dog with a French bulldog, thus bringing forth to what we know today as the Boston terrier. The initial breeder did not wanted for a dog to use on sports or hunting, and thus these dogs became the first non-sporting dogs to be bred in America. The dogs of the Boston terrier breed have the inner potential for show, and the original breeders focus more on this potential, attempting to remove the general perception on terriers as the aggressive type dogs.

The Boston Terrier Dogs Have Uniques Temperament And Personality

Having a high-spirited personality, the dogs of the Boston terrier breed try to make all the people around part of their activities. The ancestors of this breed of dogs were originally been bred for fighting, but the Boston terriers were bred to be companion dogs. It has a sweet and friendly disposition toward its owner and likes to be the center of attention. If you don’t like to be licked on your face you should keep the distance from a Boston terrier dog, which is very affectionate towards its owner and his friends and like to lick everybody on their faces. They are social animals and get along well when raised around children, the elderly and others.

Tips On Caring Of Your Boston Terrier Dog

Like other dog breeds, an important thing to remember about your Boston terrier is that it gets plenty of exercise outdoors to ensure that he/she stays healthy and alert. Frequently running and playing in the sunshine will make a lot of good for their health status, though they are not hyperactive dogs. If they are staying outdoors, a fenced in backyard is a good idea, as well as a small doghouse to protect them from the elements. These dogs need lots of tender loving care, so spending quality time with them playing and petting them is important. They also need quality food and plenty of fresh water.

When looking for any pet, the best place to start is an animal rescue center. You can find abandoned Boston terrier dogs which need a loving family.
